Mr Miller is a 1985 graduate of the Liberty University School of Business with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. He earned his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation after completing all of the requirements, including work as a tax and audit accountant. Due to time limitations, Mr. Miller no longer performs CPA-type audits for clients, but continues to focus his practice on legal and tax matters.
Mr. Miller has been practicing law since 1990 when he graduated from the West Virginia University College of Law. Upon graduation, Mr. Miller served for six years with the U.S. Army Judge Advocate's General Corps (Army JAG), including tours of duty at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and the United States Army Legal Services Agency in Falls Church, Virginia. During his initial tour, Mr. Miller successfully completed the U.S. Army Airborne School. Mr. Miller resigned his commission as a Major, leaving active duty in 1996.
Mr. Miller earned his Masters of Law in Taxation (graduating with honors) from the Georgetown University School of Law (Washington, D.C.) in 1996 and began working for the U.S. Department of Justice in their Tax Division. During his work there, he handled many tax cases for the Internal Revenue Service focusing on criminal fraud investigations. He represented the United States in Florida, New York, Michigan, Virginia and West Virginia, serving as a Special Assistant United States Attorney.
In 2000, Mr. Miller accepted a tax attorney position with the Roanoke law firm of WootenHart, PLC. He later became a partner with the law firm of Carter, Osborne & Miller, Attorneys at Law. He began his own firm in 2007 and continues to serve Virginia and West Virginia clients from his Roanoke law office.
In June, 2011, Mr. Miller's practice was incorporated as Joel B Miller PLC.
